Andrea Cody
Andrea believes that the first step in teaching dance is understanding her students. She takes time to get to know couples by listening to them and asking them questions geared toward understanding how they want to dance together. Once she knows what her clients want, she draws upon her extensive knowledge of dance to tailor her services to fit their specific needs.
Andrea grew up in Houston’s Memorial area and has enjoyed dancing her entire life. She trained in her youth at Houston Ballet Academy and later developed a passion for social dancing. In high school at St. John’s School, she founded and directed the school’s Social Dancing Society. In 1997, she was a founding member and instructor for the Houston Swing Dance Society, for which she also served as Vice President. In 1999, she placed first in the city and tenth in the nation for swing dancing at the American Lindy Hop Championships. She is currently the Director of Dance Houston, an emerging non-profit arts organization that produces dance festivals at the Wortham Center.
Andrea earned a Bachelor's with honors from University of Chicago where she designed a unique degree program studying social dance history, theory, and choreography. She has taught dance in schools and studios, in preschools with Arts Alive!, and for Project Row Houses. She has choreographed for professional companies including the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, Dance of Asian America, City Dance Company, the Great Caruso Dinner Theater, and Kuumba House Dance Theatre.
As the Director of Wedding Dance Houston, Andrea shares her knowledge of choreography and her love of social dancing with engaged couples and their loved ones, while also creating precious memories for them.
Patrick Walsh
Patrick Walsh is an avid dance teacher, performer and social dancer. He started seriously pursuing ballroom dancing while at Carnegie Mellon University, when a friend whose partner had recently left her asked if he’d like to try competing. At first reluctant to make any long-term commitments, he soon became hooked. Pat competed and performed in ballroom dancing across the United States, as well as in Canada and England, for eight years and won numerous awards including U.S. Collegiate Latin Champion in 1997.
In 2001, Pat hung up his competition tails suit and shifted his focus towards social dancing and dance instruction. Pat has volunteered as an instructor for the student-run social dance clubs at Rice and the University of Houston for four years, and has taught in a number of other venues including “cotillion” classes for seventh-graders. While he enjoys teaching group classes, he’s especially fond of working one-on-one with couples and loves teaching wedding dances. He teaches nearly all styles of partner dancing, including his favorite dance: salsa.
Pat was president of the Houston chapter of U.S.A. Dance (formerly the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancer’s Association) in 2000 and 2001 and remains active in the chapter. He also emcees ballroom dance competitions. Pat is a licensed professional civil engineer and in his “real job” serves as Transportation Director for the City of Sugar Land. When he’s not on the dance floor, he’s usually running in Houston’s Memorial Park with his four-legged buddy, Lucy.
